Here is what we are learning this month in second grade:
Math
This week we started Chapter 5: 2 Digit Subtraction. Please make sure you are reviewing this at home. Students will learn multiple strategies on how we can subtract. These strategies include: using a number line, breaking apart ones, base ten blocks and adding to find the difference.
Vocabulary: ones, tens, subtract, difference, subtrahend, minuend, regroup, digit, bar model, number sentence
Reading
We started our unit on poetry. Students will read a variety of different poems and practice writing their own poetry!
Vocabulary: poetry beats, alliteration, rhymes, rhythm, repeated lines, onomatopoeia
Writing
Students will write take a stance and write opinion pieces. It is expected that they write a 5 sentence paragraph using a topic sentence, three supporting details and a closing sentence.
Here are some prompts that students can practice at home:
What is your favorite animal?
What is your favorite food?
What is your favorite book?
Which holiday do you like best?
Do cats or dogs make better pets?
Science
We started our unit on weather. Students have begun tracking the weather everyday. We look at the daily weather conditions such as; sunrise/sunset, high and low temperature, sky and wind speed.
Vocabulary: sunrise, sunset, water cycle, evaporate, condense, precipitation, migrate, hibernate, lightening, tornado, hurricane, cirrus cloud, cumulus cloud, stratus cloud, thermometer
Social Studies
This month's Be Kind trait is Being Honest. During our class meetings we will talking about what is means to be honest and also doing some activities about honesty.
