BE Kind Kick Off Assembly – We were excited to have the Bee Kind Assembly… Probably more important than anything else we do is how we treat each other every day. We are so pleased with our third graders! They are encouraging others, sharing, taking turns, walking quietly in line, cleaning up in the cafeteria, and being generally very respectful…. Way to go third grade!!!
Attendance - Keep up the good work!! We are trying to beat our attendance rate from last year… Please be present everyday!!!
Reading - We are encouraging students to ask questions while reading… Think about the character. How does the character feel? What will they do next? Why is the setting of the story important? Please model by asking your child questions about what they are reading at home.
Science - Our focus for this week was for students to describe the function of plant structures: roots – absorb nutrients and water, stems – provide support for the plant to grow, Leaves soak up sunshine and air to make food for they plant “photosynthesis”, Flowers – attract pollinators like bees and butterflies to the plant and they produce seeds so more plants can grow.
Math - Student practiced multiplication, division and writing number bonds… There is math homework about 3 or 4 days a week.

What a great first week of Third Grade!!
Kindness Matters! – In our Horizon community Kindness Matters! This month we are focusing on respect. We modeled being respectful, caught students being respectful and brainstormed different ways we can be respectful around the school.
Reading ... Think About Vocabulary! – We practiced one of the “Close Read” steps of circling words we think are important or want to think about while reading the Pledge of Allegiance and Ruby the Copy Cat. We are encouraging students to think about vocabulary when they are reading.
Reading vocabulary: pleasant coincidence, modeled, loyal, recited, murmured
The Pledge of Allegiance – Students use the “Close Read” model of stopping and thinking about vocabulary as we read the Pledge of Allegiance. We discussed synonyms for the terms…pledge = promise, allegiance = loyalty , republic = representative government, indivisible = will not be divided, nation = country, liberty = freedom and justice = fairness. We played a synonym matching game. We then wrote the meaning of the pledge in simple terms…
I promise to be loyal and respectful to the flag
Of the United States of America
And to the representative government for which it stands
One country, under God, which will not be divided,
With freedom and fairness for all.
Spelling – Students took the Developmental Spelling Assessment (DSA) tests to help us in making up spelling lists on their levels.
Math – Students used a Read, Draw, Write method to solve story problems. They also showed multiplication problems in a variety of ways…
Math vocabulary: addition equation, equal groups, repeated addition, array, multiplication sentence, number of groups, row, column
